ian carty ceramics fine art and horsehair ceramics ireland Ian’s technique is based on a type of Pottery mass-produced around the first century AD these pots were coated with a very fine slip which potters had been using for hundreds of years to create there famous white and black pottery. He has made his own Irish version by infusing real Horsehair, and peat from Irish bogs into the kiln as the vessels are fired, this releases carbon, in the form of black smoke which is infused into the pottery creating a dark black finish, and leaving the carbon infused into the ceramic, each piece is polished with bees wax to protect the finish. This process is very time consuming, and often takes Ian several hours to complete just one piece.
