Ian Carty
Ian makes ceramic vessels destined mainly for low temperature firing techniques, using glazes pushed to the edge Ian revels in collaborations with forces that are never entirely under his control, such as fire, chemical reduction and environmental conditions. Much of Ian’s wall art is an expression in three dimensions of enchanted Irish landscapes and mythology while the hummingbird symbolizes love, joy and beauty,  
Ian has been a finalist in RTEs TV series Craft master in 2011, Won a highly commended Award at the RDS showcase 2014, Winner of the Gallery Zozimus Award at the National Irish ceramics awards 2014, 3rd place in the Lissadell art competition 2014, 2nd place in the YB Yeats Great 150th celebrations Art competition 2015, His work has been featured in John Goodes Book The best of Irish ceramics and Ian has participated in several group and solo exhibitions since 2011.
Ian Carty’s experiments with materials and firing conditions, and explorations into surface texture and colour, result in unique pieces which celebrate the complex and beautiful interactions of clay, glaze and smoke.

Ian exhibits regularly in solo and group shows throughout Ireland London and the USA

ian carty ceramics fine art and horsehair ceramics ireland  Ian’s technique is based on a type of Pottery mass-produced around the first century AD these pots were coated with a very fine slip which potters had been using for hundreds of years to create there famous white and black pottery.                                                                           He has made his own Irish version by infusing real Horsehair, and peat from Irish bogs into the kiln as the vessels are fired, this releases carbon, in the form of black smoke which is infused into the pottery creating a dark black finish, and leaving the carbon infused into the ceramic, each piece is polished with bees wax to protect the finish. New Large Amphora vessels

ian carty ceramics ireland An amphora is a type of container of a characteristic shape and size, descending from at least as early as the Neolithic period. Amphorae were used in vast numbers for the transport and storage of various products, both liquid and dry, but mostly for wine.   For the most part, however, an amphora was tableware, or sat close to the table, and was intended to be seen, and was finely decorated as such by master craftsmen   Most were produced with a pointed base to allow upright storage by embedding in soft ground, such as sand. The base facilitated transport by ship,   Amphorae are of great use to maritime archeologists, as they often indicate the age of a shipwreck and the geographic origin of the cargo. They are occasionally so well preserved that the original content is still present, providing information on foodstuffs and mercantile systems.
